We all know that trees can not fly.

Some would think that this is because they do not have wings. But there are many objects without wings that are able to fly through the air if the wind is strong enough. The reason that trees can’t fly is because they have roots buried deep into the earth. They grip hold of the ground so tightly that the strongest winds can not move them.

Many Christians wonder why they fail to reach the levels of holiness that we see in the lives of the great heroes of the faith. We see some people moving powerfully in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, others devoting their whole lives to service and love of their neighbours…and then we look at ourselves struggling to just pray let alone be virtuous.

The scriptures assure us that God is working to make us holy. The wind of his Spirit is constantly blowing upon our life. The reason we fail to move is because we are so attached to things of this world. These things are not necessarily bad, they just get in the way of the one thing that is better. Our world is meant to point us to God, not hold us back from embracing God.

This is why St Paul says in the letter to the Colossians, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Col 3:3). If our eyes are set on Christ, and our number one priority is the love of God, then we will find that the Spirit will be free to move powerfully in our life.
