When we notice that there are two accounts of creation (Gen 1:1-2:4a and 2:4b- 3:24) we realize that we have more than a literal account of what happened. The strict structure of the first account of creation, which we have begun reading today, is a sign of the power of God at work. Structure is a result of order and power. This first account of creation demonstrates how utterly powerful and majestic God is in comparison to us. God spoke and the words that he spoke describe exactly what happened next! I think that there are probably moments in each of our lives when we wished that we had such power and authority. There is no doubt that God is in complete and utter control of all that is happening.

The intent of the sacred author is to present to us the fundamental truth that God is the author of all life. It is God who has created the heavens and the earth. He is the one responsible for the existence of all things. The author also wants to relay to us the idea that God had something in His mind when he created the heavens and the earth. As we shall see tomorrow, the highpoint of creation is humanity. It is for us that God has created the universe as a means to demonstrate His love for us. This account of creation is not meant to represent a strict diary of the work of creation other than to tell us who is the author of the work and what the result of His work produced.

It is important for us to reflect upon the power of God’s Word, as it is a key to understanding His still ongoing work in our lives today! God continues to speak to and into our life situations to bring about His will. He does not want us to lose sight of the power of His Word to bring something out of nothing; order out of the chaos of our lives. There is no doubt in my mind that God’s power has not been diminished over the years. Yes, there may be all sorts of sin and rebellion against His will in our world but that does not lessen His love for us nor His commitment to bringing about the fulfillment of His desire that we will one day be united with Him forever in heaven. Let us not frustrate His desires with our sin but surrender to the truth of His Word in our lives every day.

Do I really believe that God is in control of every situation of my life, that is, He places His grace and power at my disposal to enable me to be obedient to His every Word?

Father God, you are powerful and great, your Word extends to the utmost bounds of the earth. Grant me the humility and grace to live my life in cooperation with your Word so that your will is done in my life as it is in heaven.
