Mary is the supreme example of discipleship that we have to study. Her entire life is given over to the service of God’s will to the point that she stands at the foot of the cross as her son breathes his last. If we desire to be a disciple of Jesus, this is the path that we will have to walk as well. Mary is a woman who never shirked her responsibilities and thus was with Jesus until the end. In this, I pray that we will follow her example.

Mary as the Lady of Sorrows is a picture of faith in the midst of the turbulent situations of her life. It cannot have been easy for her to follow her son’s life of ministry and see that the establishment despised him. Nor would it have got any easier as He approached His final days. Throughout all of this Mary’s faith remained constant. She does not play a major role in the ministry of Jesus except to implore Him to work a miracle at the Wedding Feats of Cana when the wine runs out. She remains in the background; yet when she appears she is always portrayed as a woman of great faith – someone to imitate and respect.

Mary is also portrayed as a contemplative. When Anna and Simeon prophesy over her child she takes to heart the things that they say and ponders them. She never takes anything for granted – she is always seeking to understand God’s will more fully in order to be more obedient and faithful to it.

As she stands at the foot of the cross during Jesus’ last moments of life, He commends her to the care of John. Jesus also indicates that her motherhood will be looked upon as a universal motherhood in the years to come. She will ultimately be proclaimed Mother of the Church because of this. As our mother we ought to entrust ourselves to her intercession and never be afraid to approach her to intercede for us. Mary cannot save us, but being the mother of the Saviour, she would hold a special place in His heart. What son could resist the earnest and loving plea of his mother?

Do I take the time in the midst of my busy life to stop and reflect upon the nature of the things that are happening around me? It is so important not to let life pass idly by, but to engage myself in a dialogue with the events of my life to discover what they really mean.

Lord Jesus, you had a special love for your mother. As you entrusted her to the care of John, I am sure you were thankful for all the things she had done for you over the years. Help me to be grateful for all that my parents have given to me.
