What does it mean to be an ambassador for your country? It means to represent the interests and values of your country to others. As Christians we carry the name of the one for whom we are ambassadors. When we act badly we give Christianity a bad name. When we act well, we do a good job as ambassadors.

St Paul focuses on one aspect of the Christian life for which we are ambassadors. We are ambassadors of reconciliation. What is at the heart of the Gospel message? The reconciliation Jesus won for us with the Father. We are no longer under the power of sin, but we have been set free to live as citizens of the Kingdom of God!

Just as the Lord’s Prayer teaches us that we are to forgive others as God has forgiven us, so too does this concept of being an ambassador. We represent the forgiveness of God toward all humanity by being ready and willing to move in the same spirit of forgiveness which we have received form Christ.

What impels us to do this? Paul again gives us the answer in the reading: The love of Christ overwhelms us when we reflect on the fact that His death substitutes for what should have been our deaths. Therefore we can see how it fully works. By dying for us Christ is our ambassador before the Father. Now He calls us to represent what He has achieved to the rest of the world. One of the ways that we do this is by being willing to follow the example of Christ (in His death) in our relationships with one another.

Paul also assures that the grace to be able to do this is freely available in Christ. Ultimately the work of conversion is God’s work. An ambassador represents a someone to someone else, it is up to the principal parties concerned, whether it be the actual heads of states or whoever, to make the final treaties or agreements. This is also the case for us when we represent Christ to others. Ultimately each individual who has to stand before God face to face and justify his or her life. It is the personal relationship between God and the individual that will ultimately effect the outcome of the individual’s life.

Am I a good ambassador of the Gospel? Am I willing to share my faith with others? If my ambassador’s position came up for renewal, would I get reappointed?

Jesus, you represented perfectly the love of the Father to us? Help me represent your love on the cross to the men and women I meet each day.
