JOSEPH – A PILLAR OF FAITH Mt 1:18-25.

We sometimes forget the role that Joseph plays in the birth of Jesus and His childhood. He must have been very tempted to abandon Mary once he found out that she was already pregnant! The fact that he did not abandon her is, I think, testimony to his great faith. Joseph is a great example for us in this regard. Let us remember to pray and ask his intercession whenever our faith needs strengthening.

It was Joseph’s faith in God that enabled him to cope with his difficult situation. We do not read much about the life of Joseph in the Scriptures so we can assume that he was a very unassuming man who did not like the limelight to be shining upon him. I think that this provides us with a very good basis to understand the deeper meaning of faith. What I mean by this is that men and women of faith, throughout the history of the Church, never seek to draw attention to themselves. Yes, they may have become focal points of attention in their earthly lives, but this was not of their own choosing. To the very last one of them I am sure that they would […]

JESUS IS TRULY GOD AND TRULY MAN Mt 1:1-17.

The genealogy of Jesus serves to remind us that Jesus is a part of the human race. Here is a list of His ancestors. In the Early Church, and still today, there are those who claim to be Christian and yet they deny either the divinity or the humanity of Christ. The Early Church Councils were very careful in their deliberations to ensure that there is no doubt about what the true nature (or natures) of Jesus – He is both fully human AND fully divine!

Jesus’ divinity is essential to the role that He plays as our Saviour. Our sin has the tragic consequence of separating us from God in such a way that a human being alone is unable to bridge the chasm that is formed by the sin. Since God is infinitely good, any sin against Him causes irreparable or infinite damage to our relationship with Him. Such a gap can only be bridged by person who is divine and, therefore, not constrained by the problems of infinity! Jesus is this Man!

On the other side of the coin, so to speak, our Saviour had to be fully human, as in the words of one of the Fathers of […]

THE LIGHT OF THE TRUTH IS SHINING Jn 5:33-36.

Jesus speaks to His disciples about His identity. He tells them that John the Baptist was sent as a light to illuminate the path so that people would be able to recognise who He, Jesus, is. However, there is a greater light shining than that of the testimony of the life of John the Baptist. This greater light is the very deeds and life of Jesus Himself! Let us briefly examine what the ramifications of this teaching are for our own lives.

Jesus tells us quite specifically that ‘… His deeds bear witness to who He is.’ That is, if we study the life of Jesus, the things that He says and does, then we will be able to learn His true identity. This will not only be true for Jesus, but for His followers as well as John will later relate at the Last Supper, “They will know that your are my disciples by the love that you have for one another.” (Jn 13:34) So, not only should Jesus be known by His deeds and words, all Christians should likewise be known.

This leaves us with the responsibility to ensure, under the grace of the Holy Spirit, that our lives bear […]

Time to get Fat

So many people in our world today are obsessed with losing weight. In the USA, the dieting industry is estimated to have an annual revenue of $20 Billion. While it may be important to be physically healthy, there is a good argument for trying to make our souls fat.

There are many times where the Gospels use the image of separating the wheat from the chaff. The whole point of the image is that the outer layer of the wheat, the chaff, might look good but it has no weight. Whereas the inside of the grain is much heavier so it will not blown away in the wind. This image is always used in the context of the final judgement so it should cause us to reflect on the state of our soul.

Our society is obsessed with the outside layer of our lives; our bodies, our reputation, our status, our wealth. But in the eyes of God these things have no weight. The only thing that really matters is love. If our lives have been devoted to love of God and of our neighbour, then our souls will have weight. So while everyone else is making plans to lose weight from […]
